European Commission Announces Probe Into UIGEA

Today, the legal branch of the European Union, the European Commission, announced they will probe the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), a law passed by the US in 2006 that forced many European operators to cease their offerings to American customers. The probe follows a complaint made last December by the Remote Gambling Association, a collection of online gaming operators that include handlers of Pacific Poker, Party Poker, and several others.
"The U.S. has the right to address legitimate public policy concerns relating to Internet gambling, but discrimination against EU companies cannot be part of the policy mix," said EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.
The probe should be completed in the second half of this year. An optimal scenario for the RGA would have the results of this probe lead to World Trade Organization proceedings against the US.
